Itinerary
Day 1: Gynekha - Gur
Your trek begins at the picturesque village of Gynekha (2,950m). The trail starts with a descent to the river before a gradual climb through a forest of massive oak trees and rhododendrons. The walk is a beautiful introduction to Bhutan's alpine flora. As you ascend, the vegetation changes to spruce and fir. Arrive at Gur pasture (3,290m), a yak herder's camp where wildflowers bloom in abundance in spring (April/May) and post-monsoon (Sep/Oct). Camp overnight under the starry Himalayan sky.
Day 2: Gur - Labatama
Today offers your first spectacular mountain views. Ascend a ridge to cross a pass at 4,240m. From here, weather permitting, you can see the majestic Kanchenjunga (8,586m) in Sikkim and potentially Mt. Everest. The trail then descends into the Labatama valley, dotted with yak herder huts. You will camp near Uthso Tsho (4,300m), a stunning turquoise alpine lake. This area is known for its many lakes, hence the name 'Thousand Lakes Trek.'
Day 3: Labatama Halt
A dedicated day to explore the stunning lakes surrounding your campsite. Hike to Seto Tsho, Jaget Tsho, and other smaller lakes hidden in the ridges. It's a photographer's paradise and a perfect spot for trout fishing (permit required). You can also hike to a nearby peak for better panoramic views of the entire Bhutanese Himalayan range, including Jomolhari, Jichu Drake, and Masang Gang. Return to Labatama for a hearty camp dinner.
Day 4: Labatama - Panka
The trail climbs along the western side of Dala Tsho lake to a saddle at 4,520m, the highest point of your trek. From the summit, the view of the Himalayan peaks is unparalleled. On a clear day, up to major peaks can be visible. Descend towards Panka (4,000m), passing more lakes and likely encountering yak herds grazing in the high meadows. Panka is a beautiful campsite with open views towards the Dagala range.
Day 5: Panka - Talakha
A day of scenic ridge walking. You will cross several passes, each offering a different perspective of the Thimphu valley far below and the mountains above. The trail leads through blue pine forests filled with birdsong. You will camp near Talakha Goemba (3,080m), a monastery perched on a ridge with a commanding view of Thimphu city twinkling at night. Visit the monastery in the evening to interact with the resident monks.
Day 6: Talakha - Thimphu
Wake up to sunrise views over Thimphu. The final descent is steep but short, leading down to Chamgang village through apple orchards. Your vehicle awaits to drive you to Thimphu. Check into your hotel and enjoy a hot shower—a welcome luxury after five days of camping! In the evening, celebrate the completion of your trek with a traditional Bhutanese farewell dinner featuring cultural performances.
