Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival Paro - Thimphu

Upon arrival at Paro International Airport, you will be met by your guide. Drive immediately to Thimphu (1.5 hours), following the Pa Chhu and Thimphu Chhu rivers. Thimphu is the modern capital of Bhutan but retains its cultural charm with no traffic lights and traditional architecture. In the evening, explore Thimphu's main street and visit the Local Crafts Bazaar to see fine bamboo weaving and jewelry. Overnight at your hotel in Thimphu.

Day 2: Thimphu - Punakha

Start the day with a visit to the Kuensel Phodrang (Buddha Point) to see the massive 51-meter lush bronze Buddha statue. Then, depart for Punakha, crossing the Dochula Pass (3,100m). Stop to admire the 108 Druk Wangyal Chortens and the panoramic mountain views. Continue descending into the lush, green valley of Punakha. Visit Chimi Lhakhang, the fertility temple, accessible via a short walk through a local village and rice fields. Arrive in Punakha and prepare for the festival experience starting tomorrow.

Day 3: Punakha Drubchen/Tsechu

Today requires an early start to witness the Punakha Drubchen or Tsechu. The Drubchen is a unique festival hosting a dramatic recreation of the 17th-century battle against Tibetan forces. 'Pazaps' (local militia men) dressed in traditional battle gear perform glorious reenactments. If visiting during the Tsechu (festival days), you will see monks performing sacred mask dances in the courtyard of the majestic Punakha Dzong. The energy is electric, with locals celebrating their history and faith. Spend the full day immersing yourself in the festivities, photography, and cultural observation.

Day 4: Punakha Tsechu (Day 2)

Return to the Dzong for the morning session of the festival. Watch the unfolding of more mask dances and religious dramas. In the afternoon, escape the crowds for a scenic hike to Khamsum Yulley Namgyal Chorten. This hike takes about 1 hour uphill through pine forests and paddy fields. The chorten is a stunning example of Bhutanese architecture and offers commanding views of the Punakha valley and the winding Mo Chhu river below. It's a peaceful contrast to the bustling festival.

Day 5: Punakha - Phobjikha

Leave the subtropical warmth of Punakha and drive towards the Phobjikha Valley (3,000m), a vast U-shaped glacial valley. The drive is incredibly scenic. Phobjikha is a designated conservation area and the winter home of the rare and endangered Black-necked Cranes (November to March). Upon arrival, walk along the Gangtey Nature Trail (1.5 hours), a gentle path skirting the forest edge and offering beautiful views of the valley floor. Visit the Black-necked Crane Information Centre to learn about these wetlands.

Day 6: Phobjikha - Paro

Visit the 17th-century Gangtey Monastery (Gangtey Goemba) that overlooks the valley. It is the largest Nyingma monastery in western Bhutan. Then, settle in for the drive back to Paro (approx. 5 hours). You will cross the Lawala and Dochula passes again, offering a different perspective of the landscape. Arrive in Paro in the evening. If time permits, stroll through Paro town's old wooden shopfronts.

Day 7: Tiger's Nest Hike

No trip to Bhutan is complete without the hike to Taktsang (Tiger's Nest). Start early to beat the heat and crowds. The trail is steep but rewarding, climbing through blue pine forests. The monastery clings to the side of a granite cliff 3,000 feet above the valley floor. Visit the sacred shrines where Guru Rinpoche meditated. The view from the top is spiritual and breathtaking. Descend for a late lunch at the cafeteria. In the evening, enjoy a traditional farewell dinner, perhaps accompanied by a cultural performance.

Day 8: Departure

Your Bhutanese adventure concludes today. After breakfast, transfer to Paro International Airport. Bid farewell to your guide and driver who have become friends over the last week. Tashi Delek and safe travels!
