Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival Paro
Arrive in Paro. After checking in, visit the 7th-century Kyichu Lhakhang, one of the 108 temples built by Tibetan King Songtsen Gampo. It is a place of profound peace. Circumambulate the temple and spin the prayer wheels. In the evening, meet your guide for a briefing on Bhutanese Buddhism and the journey ahead.
Day 2: Thimphu Spirituality
Drive to Thimphu. Visit Changangkha Lhakhang, a fortress-like temple perched on a ridge, where parents bring newborns for blessings. Participate in a private meditation session led by a monk at a quiet temple. Visit Pangri Zampa, the college of astrology, to learn about the role of astrology in daily Bhutanese life. Evening at leisure to reflect.
Day 3: Punakha - Chimi Lhakhang
Travel to Punakha over the Dochula Pass. The 108 chortens here were built to atone for loss of life in conflict, a reminder of the value of peace. Descend to walk through rice fields to Chimi Lhakhang, the temple of the Divine Madman. His teaching methods were unorthodox (using humor and sexuality), and the temple is now a pilgrimage site for fertility and protection.
Day 4: Gangtey Monastery
Drive to the Phobjikha Valley. Visit the Gangtey Goemba, the largest Nyingma monastery in western Bhutan. It is a major center for Buddhist studies. Interact with the monks and perhaps witness a debate session. The valley itself is a conservation area for Black-necked Cranes, which the locals revere as heavenly birds.
Day 5: Paro Return & Butter Lamps
Return to Paro. In the evening, visit a local nunnery or temple to perform a butter lamp offering ceremony. Lighting a lamp symbolizes the dispelling of darkness (ignorance) and the cultivation of wisdom. It is a moving and visually beautiful ritual. Enjoy a final vegetarian dinner at a farmhouse.
Day 6: Departure
Transfer to Paro International Airport. Depart with a lighter spirit and a peaceful mind.
