Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival Paro - Thimphu
Touch down in Paro and drive immediately to Thimphu (1 hr). Stop at Chuzom (river confluence) to see the three styles of stupas. In Thimphu, visit the National Memorial Chorten, constantly buzzing with devotees. Visit the glorious Tashichho Dzong in the late afternoon to see the flag lowering ceremony. Dinner at a traditional Bhutanese restaurant.
Day 2: Thimphu: Cultural & Artistic Exploration
Spend a full day exploring the capital's treasures. Visit the Buddha Dordenma for panoramic views, the Institute for Zorig Chusum (Painting School), and the National Textile Museum. In the afternoon, visit the Motithang Takin Preserve to see the unique national animal. Wander through the local craft bazaar for authentic souvenirs.
Day 3: Thimphu to Punakha
Rise early for the drive to Dochula Pass. If clear, the mountain views are incredible. Continue to Punakha to visit the 'Palace of Great Happiness' (Punakha Dzong), located at the river confluence. Walk across the 160m suspension bridge nearby for photos and a thrill. On the way back or forth, take a short hike to Chimi Lhakhang. Overnight in the balmy Punakha valley.
Day 4: Punakha to the Glacial Phobjikha Valley
Drive into the wide, U-shaped glacial valley of Phobjikha. Visit the 17th-century Gangtey Monastery and take a gentle walk along the Gangtey Nature Trail. This valley is the winter home to the Black-necked Cranes and offers some of the most serene landscapes in Bhutan.
Day 5: Phobjikha to Paro
Drive back to Paro. Visit the National Museum of Bhutan (Ta Dzong) to see a collection of thangkas, festival masks, and heritage items. Walk down to the Rinpung Dzong. In the evening, stroll through Paro's main street, lined with traditional wooden buildings housing shops and cafes.
Day 6: Tiger's Nest Excursion
The highlight of the trip: hiking to Taktsang Goemba (Tiger's Nest). Start early to beat the heat. The trail goes through pine forests. Visit the monastery temples clinging to the rock. After the hike, treat yourself to a traditional hot stone bath (Dotsho) to soothe your muscles. Farewell dinner.
Day 7: Departure
Transfer to Paro Airport. Even a short glimpse of Bhutan leaves a lasting impression.
